Maulana Peer Shabbir Ahmed, prominent Islamic scholar and Ex-MLC, passes away

HYDERABAD: People across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are mourning the loss of Maulana Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed Sahab, a respected Islamic scholar, former MLC, and President of Jamiat Ulama Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He died on Sunday, leaving a significant gap in religious leadership, social service, and political advocacy.
Maulana Shabbir Ahmed was known for promoting faith and harmony, and his death brought widespread grief. The Telangana Government, led by Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy, was requested to give him state honours at his funeral to recognize his many contributions. The funeral was held with these honours.
Maulana Shabbir Ahmed was born into a respected religious family in Telangana and devoted himself to Islamic scholarship from a young age. He memorized the Holy Qur’an, becoming a ‘Hafiz’, and continued his studies to become a renowned scholar with a deep understanding of Shariah and Fiqh.
As President of Jamiat Ulama Telangana & Andhra Pradesh, he worked to protect minority rights, support both modern and religious education for underprivileged youth, and safeguard Waqf properties. The organization became a key part of community welfare and mediation during his leadership.
He also made a significant impact in politics as an MLC in Telangana, initiating programs for minority welfare, offering educational scholarships, and fostering communal harmony. People from different parties and faiths respected his wisdom and effectiveness.
Maulana Shabbir Ahmed’s legacy comes from a lifetime of service. He helped establish educational programs that combined traditional madrasa education with modern approaches, provided relief during difficult times, and promoted interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence. According to Shaik Salauddin, Founder President of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union, his Friday sermons and public talks inspired many people to live with compassion and unity.
Politicians and community leaders have expressed their condolences. Founder of Telangana Jagruthi Kalvakuntla.Kavitha, in a statement, said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Maulana Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmad, President of Jamiat Ulama Telangana & Andhra Pradesh. His lifelong dedication to education and the upliftment of the Muslim community will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to his family(sic).”
Maulana Peer Shabbir Ahmed Sahab is remembered for his scholarship, service, and efforts to connect faith with modern society. He stood up for the marginalized and worked for harmony.
