Recall: When Hyderabad’s Marredpally lane got Ivanka Trump’s name

Marredpally Ivanka Trump Road

Hyderabad: As the Republican candidate, Donald Trump elected as the 47th President of the United States of America (USA), here is an instance where a link road in Marredpally of Hyderabad in Telangana was named after Ivanka Trump, the daughter of Donald Trump.

In April 2018, when Telangana was under the rule of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), now Bharat Rashtra Samithi(BRS) party, some of the residents and activists in Marredpally took out a novel protest grabbing the attention to the damaged road filled with potholes in Hyderabad. As a part of their efforts, residents themselves have taken up the repair works by pooling in money. And the name that they gave for the new road, ‘KTR-Ivanka Trump’ road. One of the people leading this protest was Krishank Manne, who has now joined the Bharat Rashtra Samithi party.

Taking a jibe at the then Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, K Taraka Rama Rao, the activists named the road as KTR-Ivanka Trump Road. The quirky name has managed to get the attention of the authorities quickly.

It is pertinent to note that the link road connects the Marredpally area to the Sangeet junction and also hosts educational institutions. As part of the protests, residents have also invited Ivanka Trump to visit the street so that it can be repaired.

According to the reports, when Ivanka visited Hyderabad for a Global Business Summit in 2017, the Telangana government has spent crores of money to transform the city roads from where Ivanka Trump would pass through. This was criticised by several residents and politicians and called out the inequality. One of the ministers even commented saying, that the “city has now two types of roads, Ivanka Trump Road and normal Roads.” Meanwhile, the Marredpally residents took up their protest months after Ivanka’s visit.

Civic authorities swing into action

The Marredpally residents succeeded in their efforts. Within days of the residents’ protest, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities started to undertake the road works the following week, May 2018, as reports suggests.
