Mandaviya’s intervention forces delivery apps to rethink 10-minute promise

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU) and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) have welcomed Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya’s timely action, which prompted major delivery platforms to scrap the risky “10-minute delivery” deadlines.
Responding to mounting concerns about the safety, health, and working conditions of delivery partners, the Union Labour Minister engaged directly with top platform companies such as Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy, and Zomato, urging them to abandon their rigid, hazardous delivery-time demands.
As a result of this intervention, Blinkit has removed the 10-minute delivery promise from all its branding and platforms. The company has revised its main tagline from “10,000+ products delivered in 10 minutes” to “30,000+ products delivered at your doorstep.”
Other delivery aggregators have assured the Government of India they will remove delivery-time guarantees from their advertisements and social media platforms in the coming days. This decision paves the way for safer roads, lighter workloads, and better working conditions for gig and platform workers.
“This is a significant and much-needed step in protecting the lives and dignity of gig and platform workers,” said Shaik Salauddin, Founder President of TGPWU and National General Secretary of IFAT.
Further statement by Shaik Salauddin read, “The 10-minute delivery model forced delivery partners into dangerous road behaviour, extreme stress, and unsafe working conditions. We welcome and thank Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for listening to workers’ voices and intervening decisively in the interest of their safety.”
He further added that “This intervention is a victory for all gig and platform workers, especially in the context of the nationwide flash strike and protests held from 25–31 December, which highlighted unsafe work practices imposed by platforms. TGPWU and IFAT will continue to demand fair, safe, and dignified working conditions for all platform workers across India.”
TGPWU and IFAT reaffirm that worker safety should always come before profit-driven deadlines, urging all platform companies to open genuine conversations with worker unions when shaping policies that affect workers’ lives.
