“Will it take a life?”: Mallampet residents demand action on dangerous roads
Mallampet: Residents of Mallampet are expressing deep frustration over the poor road conditions in their area. This has resulted in severe traffic congestion and delays, particularly after the opening of Exit 4A, which was implemented without proper planning. They are calling on GHMC officials and other authorities to expedite the ongoing road expansion works to alleviate these issues.
Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Jagdish, a resident of Mallampet, voiced his discontent, “Our first concern is the flyover being constructed in Bachupally. The work began three years ago, yet it is progressing at a painfully slow pace, resulting in heavy traffic jams. Additionally, the road adjacent to the flyover is in disrepair, riddled with potholes, making it difficult for bikers, vehicles, and commuters to navigate.”
Jagdish highlighted the specific issues on the Bachupally to Mallampet route toward Exit 4A, “While half of the road work has been completed, the remaining section is still unfinished. The completed portions are not adequately constructed at the edges, causing vehicles to slip and leading to numerous accidents. I’ve witnessed three fatalities so far.”
He continued, “The premature opening of Exit 4A has exacerbated the situation, as it was only half-constructed. Now, the influx of vehicles from other areas is contributing to severe traffic congestion. Residents of Mallampet struggle to use these roads, especially on weekends, facing immense difficulties while commuting. The chaotic conditions are prompting unsafe driving behaviours and making it challenging for pedestrians to navigate.”
Jagdish pointed out further issues, stating, “The recently laid roads are already in a terrible state. Although officials widened the road to 80 feet, they left a massive building in place, creating another major traffic bottleneck in Mallampet.”
He highlighted the need for action, saying, “If Exit 4A had been fully completed before opening, many of our traffic issues would have been resolved. The current situation, with incomplete roads, is chaotic and unacceptable.”
The situation worsened last week due to heavy rains, leading residents to describe it as a “pothole nightmare.” Jagdish noted that a significant pothole had formed on the main road in front of Ratnadeep in Mallampet, filling with rainwater and creating hazardous conditions for commuters. “Motorcyclists are getting stuck in the pothole, causing frustration for many travellers. People are asking, “Will it take a life before this problem is addressed?” The community’s anger is palpable as we demand immediate action to repair the roads.”
Residents are urging local authorities to prioritise these repairs and provide a safer, more reliable commuting experience.
