New signage, train and coach indication boards will also be installed for improved navigation and information. The station, located just 3 km from Secunderabad, serves as a major hub for suburban rail transport and handles an average of 2,500 passengers daily. The redevelopment is expected to significantly improve the passenger experience and enhance the station's role as a key transportation hub.
Malkajgiri Railway Station To Undergo Major Revamp With Rs. 27.6 Crore Investment

Hyderabad: Malkajgiri Railway Station, one of 40 stations across Telangana being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), is set to undergo significant improvements with an estimated cost of Rs 27.61 crore. The redevelopment aims to enhance passenger facilities and transform the station into a modern transport hub.

The redevelopment project is progressing at a fast pace, with around 60% of the work already completed. The remaining upgrades are expected to be finished within the current financial year. This redevelopment is part of a broader initiative to modernize railway stations across India and provide world-class amenities to passengers.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has been rolled out across Telangana, with a total investment of Rs 2,737 crore to upgrade 40 stations. The goal is to enhance passenger amenities and transform these stations into growth centers that cater to the increasing demand for rail travel in the region. The project gained significant momentum when Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the station upgrades in Telangana during ceremonies in August 2023 and February 2024. Notably, Secunderabad Railway Station is also undergoing major upgrades as part of the initiative to bring it up to global standards.

In addition to the redevelopment of Malkajgiri, Charlapalli station has been developed as an alternative terminal to alleviate congestion at existing terminals in the twin cities. The station is being equipped with modern facilities to make it a convenient choice for passengers.

The ABSS policy aims to modernize stations on an ongoing basis, with a long-term vision to meet the ever-growing needs of rail passengers. The upgrades are being planned based on a comprehensive master plan that addresses the increasing demand for rail services and ensures enhanced patronage of these stations.

Malkajgiri Railway Station, a key station in the region, is located just 3 km from Secunderabad. It serves as a major hub for suburban rail transport and falls under the Hyderabad Division, categorized as Suburban Grade-3 (SG-3). The station handles an average footfall of 2,500 passengers daily and generates annual earnings of Rs 5.48 crore. Currently, 27 pairs of trains halt at Malkajgiri Station, making it a crucial stop for commuters in the twin cities.

As part of the station’s redevelopment, several improvements are planned. The station building’s façade will be upgraded, and a new entrance portico will be added. A 12-meter wide foot over bridge (FOB) will be constructed, complete with three lifts and three escalators for enhanced accessibility. Additional covers will be added over the platforms, and the surface will be improved for better durability and passenger safety.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, the station’s existing toilets will be renovated, and new toilet blocks, including facilities for differently-abled passengers, will be constructed. The waiting hall will be upgraded to accommodate more passengers, and the circulating area will undergo landscaping and improvements to ensure smoother traffic flow. The station will also feature elements showcasing art and culture, further enhancing the passenger experience. New passenger-friendly signage, train indication boards, and coach indication boards will also be installed to improve navigation and information dissemination at the station.
