Malkajgiri junction tense as officials clear footpath encroachments

HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed at Malkajgiri crossroads as municipal authorities began clearing footpath encroachments on both sides of the junction under heavy police security.
The drive is being conducted under the supervision of the Town Planning wing, officials said.
Police personnel were deployed in large numbers to prevent any untoward incidents during the clearance operation. Authorities removed temporary structures and roadside setups occupying pedestrian space.
Vendors appeal for time to vacate spaces themselves
Small vendors, who depend on these footpaths for their livelihood, appealed to officials to grant them time. They said they were willing to vacate the spaces on their own.
Some vendors gathered at the site and urged officials to postpone the eviction, citing loss of income and lack of alternative arrangements.
Officials continue drive amid appeals and resistance
Despite the appeals, officials continued the drive, stating that the removal of encroachments was necessary to ease pedestrian movement and improve traffic flow at the busy junction.
The situation remained tense but under control, with police maintaining order at the site.
