Malkajgiri commuters suffer as bus shelters remain missing

Malkajgiri commuters wait at bus stops without shelters in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Commuters in Malkajgiri circle are facing severe inconvenience due to the lack of bus shelters. Passengers said they have been travelling for years under the scorching sun and heavy rains without protection.

Thousands of commuters from different parts of the circle travel daily towards Secunderabad and ECIL by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) buses. Residents here rely heavily on public transport for commuting to twin cities. Over 100 buses operate between Secunderabad and ECIL Crossroads via Malkajgiri, with each bus making 8–12 trips a day.

Despite this, officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and TSRTC have failed to provide basic facilities, passengers complained. The stretch from Mirzalguda to Old Neredmet houses several government and private schools, colleges and offices. Buses on routes 16A, C and K ply on this corridor. However, there are no shelters at Mirzalguda, Sai Ram Theatre, Sainagar, Vaninagar, Anandbagh and Old Neredmet.

Passengers forced to wait at shops

During rains, commuters have no place to take cover and are forced to wait at nearby shops. Adding to their woes, some TSRTC buses skip halts, leaving passengers stranded. Residents said authorities must act immediately to provide shelters.

Six divisions, 400 colonies

The Malkajgiri circle covers six divisions, about 400 colonies, and a population of nearly 6 lakh. Around 30,000 people travel by nearly 100 buses daily. Shelters are missing at nearly 20 key locations.

Officials promise action

Zakia Sultana, deputy commissioner of Malkajgiri circle, said: “We will construct bus shelters wherever necessary. First, we need to identify suitable locations. A field inspection will be carried out with TSRTC officials, followed by a report to higher authorities.”
