Distribution of double bedroom houses to SC/ST victims at Malkajgiri Commissionerate

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government distributed 89 double bedroom houses to victims of serious crimes under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at an official programme held at the Malkajgiri Commissionerate in Neredmet on February 18, 2026.

The event was presided over by Adluri Laxman Kumar, Minister for Scheduled Castes Development, Tribal Welfare, Minorities Welfare and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

235 grievous cases reviewed

Also present were Bakki Venkataiah, chairman of the Telangana Scheduled Castes Commission; K. Avinash Mohanty, Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri; and Mikkilineni Manu Choudari, District Collector, Medchal–Malkajgiri.

A detailed review was conducted of rape and murder cases involving Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes victims registered between 2014 and 2025 within the jurisdiction of Malkajgiri district, covering the Malkajgiri and Cyberabad Commissionerates.

Of 235 grievous cases identified during this period, authorities prepared a preliminary list of the most vulnerable victims based on socio-economic indicators and the severity of trauma.

Focus on rehabilitation and dignity

Officials said victim compensation plays a key role in restoring social standing and dignity, particularly among vulnerable communities. Besides filing charge sheets and ensuring prosecution, the police extended support for rehabilitation through financial assistance, facilitation of employment opportunities and housing.

Housing assistance, they said, helps restore social identity, provides psychological stability and enables reintegration into society.

Following scrutiny, proposals were approved by the District Collector. A stakeholder meeting finalised the list of eligible beneficiaries and forwarded recommendations for allotment of double bedroom houses.

This is the second phase of the initiative. In July 2025, 65 victims were allotted houses under the scheme.

The minister and other dignitaries said the initiative would instil confidence among victims, assure institutional protection and enable them to live with dignity.

The Commissioner of Police and the District Collector said compensation and rehabilitation assistance were being provided in proportion to the severity of offences and assured continued support to remaining eligible victims.

The programme was attended by K. Suresh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Uppal Zone; Ch. Sridhar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri Zone; and D. Indira, Administrative Deputy Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri Commissionerate, along with other senior officials and stakeholders.
