HYDERABAD: The Mala community has announced plans to file 300 nominations in the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election as a form of democratic protest against what it calls “injustice under the guise of Scheduled Caste (SC) sub-classification.”

Addressing a press meet at Somajiguda Press Club on October 13, Mala Associations Joint Action Committee (JAC) chairman Mandala Bhaskar said the Congress government led by Revanth Reddy had ignored repeated appeals over the past five months on the losses faced by the 25 Mala sub-castes due to reservation reclassification.

‘Protest through ballot’

Bhaskar said the move to contest the bypoll was a democratic expression of anger against the government’s failure to correct the imbalance. “We are forced to take this step as the government continues to remain indifferent,” he said. The community leaders described the bypoll participation as a “war of resistance” over injustices in education, jobs and promotions.

Mala JAC demands

  • Immediate amendment of the SC classification law

  • Increase in reservation quota for the Mala group

  • Allocation of two roster points within every 20-point cycle

Bhaskar alleged that the government had deliberately harmed the education and job prospects of Mala students through divisive sub-classification policies. He said the chief minister’s actions had pushed the community towards political mobilisation.

Sharp attack on Congress government

The JAC leaders accused the Congress of “failing to deliver six guarantees” and criticised its handling of farmers’ issues, education and public health. Bhaskar said: “Farmers are struggling for urea, schools are collapsing, and government hospitals are in crisis.”

He added that Revanth Reddy’s promises of achieving a “trillion-rupee economy” were hollow when he could not fulfil commitments like loan waiver, Rythu Bharosa, old-age pensions, ₹2,500 for women, and fee reimbursement for students.

Call for united resistance

The JAC urged Mala voters and democratic forces in Jubilee Hills to unite against the Congress in the bypoll. “If the chief minister doesn’t respond immediately, the Congress government will face defeat not only here but also in the upcoming local body elections,” Bhaskar warned.

JAC honorary president Cheruku Ramachander, convenor Nallala Kanakaraju, chief coordinator Thallapalli Ravi, working chairmen Mantri Narasimha and Karike Bhim Singh, Greater Hyderabad chairman Bera Balakishan, vice-chairman Mettu Prahlad, Mala Students JAC chairman Madasu Rahul Rao, youth president PV Swamy, OU student leader Namas Saidulu, and others attended the press meet.

Election process update

Meanwhile, the first phase of randomisation for polling staff in the Jubilee Hills bypoll has been completed at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) headquarters. GHMC commissioner and district election officer RV Karnan, additional commissioners Hemant Keshav Patil (elections) and Anurag Jayanti (revenue and IT) supervised the online randomisation of presiding and assistant polling officers.
