Police escort accused Mahesh in Vanasthalipuram murder case

HYDERABAD: A man allegedly murdered his pregnant former wife in Vanasthalipuram after tracing her address through Instagram reels, police said on Thursday.

Instagram reels help accused trace victim

According to police, Devarakonda Mahesh, a native of Vilochavaram village in Manthani mandal of Peddapalli district, had known Sunitha (30), a resident of Tilakawadi in Ballarpur, Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, since 2014.

The two married in April 2022 after their acquaintance turned into a relationship. Mahesh had worked in Australia between 2019 and 2022 and later moved to Canada. As Sunitha did not receive a visa immediately, he travelled alone.

Police said marital disputes began after Mahesh allegedly grew suspicious when she did not respond to his phone calls. Sunitha travelled to Canada in October 2023, but returned to India within months as the disputes intensified. She later filed a domestic violence case against Mahesh and his parents at Ballarpur police station in Maharashtra.

Rekki conducted three days before murder

Investigators said Mahesh blamed Sunitha for developments including his mother’s death and visa-related issues. He also learnt through her Instagram reels that she had remarried in April last year.

Recently, she uploaded a photograph taken at a temple. Mahesh identified the temple as being in Vanasthalipuram and began searching the area. After visiting multiple localities, he traced her apartment in Green City Colony.

Police said he conducted a recce three days before the crime. On Wednesday afternoon, he allegedly entered the house and murdered her.

Accused carried knife, electric saws, petrol

Officers found a large knife, two electric saws and a petrol can in the accused’s bag.

“When questioned, he said he brought the saws to cut open the door if she locked herself inside after seeing him. He said the petrol was meant to threaten anyone who tried to stop him,” police said.

Mahesh was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. L B Nagar Deputy Commissioner of Police Anuradha and Inspector Mahesh confirmed the arrest.
