Mahabubabad SHO removed after video shows officer grabbing student by throat

MAHABUBABAD: Mahabubabad district police have removed a police officer from active duty after a video showing him grabbing a polytechnic student by the throat during a protest went viral on social media.
The incident took place when polytechnic students were protesting in Mahabubabad. The video triggered criticism on social media over the officer’s conduct.
According to reports, the officer was identified as Town Circle Inspector L Raghupathi Reddy. A report published on August 19 said he was seen holding the throats of two students and pushing them back as police stopped the protesters from attempting to besiege the district collectorate.
Video triggers criticism over police action
Mahabubabad Superintendent of Police Dr Shabarish P is currently the district police chief, according to the official district administration website.
The SP has removed the officer from active duty and ordered a high-level inquiry by a deputy superintendent of police-rank officer, according to the information provided.
The inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the conduct shown in the video.
Police action follows viral footage
The incident has drawn attention after the video circulated widely on social media. The students had gathered to protest and attempted to proceed towards the district collectorate.
The available reports identify the officer as a circle inspector rather than an SHO. The Mahabubabad district police website also lists L Raghupathi Reddy as the Town Inspector in earlier 2026 reports, while its current police directory lists the district’s inspectors.
