LPG supply crunch hits Hyderabad households; survey flags delays, black market purchases

Domestic Lpg Cylinders Stacked At A Distributor Point Amid Reports Of Supply Delays In Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: A citizen survey on domestic LPG supply has found widespread disruption in booking and delivery across the city, with a large number of households reporting delays and dealer claims of shortages over the past week.

According to responses collected from 7,081 residents, only 21% said booking and delivery of LPG cylinders were normal during the past seven days. Another 18% reported waiting longer than usual for delivery.

The largest group—37% of respondents—said dealers told them cylinders were not available or that bookings were delayed. About 13% said they had to repeatedly follow up with dealers to receive delivery.

The survey also indicated that 11% of households had to buy cylinders from the black market at higher prices.

Extra charges reported outside official supply system

Among 2,302 respondents who answered questions on black market purchases, 35% said there had been no such purchase in their household or neighbourhood.

However, others reported paying extra. About 4% said they paid up to ₹100 extra per cylinder, while 11% paid between ₹100 and ₹300.

A larger share reported steeper costs. Around 16% paid ₹300–₹500 extra per cylinder, while 18% said the premium exceeded ₹500.

Another 16% said they were unsure about the exact amount charged.

Dealers citing supply disruptions

In responses from 2,135 residents about dealer communication, 39% said dealers had indicated that a supply shortage currently exists.

Another 31% reported that dealers warned deliveries may be delayed, while 27% said dealers had not mentioned any supply issue.

Only 3% said they could not comment on the matter.

The findings indicate that a majority of respondents have experienced either delays, shortages or higher prices linked to LPG supply in the city over the past week.
