Can “I Love Litter Free Hyderabad” make a difference?

Litter Free Hyderabad

Uppal: A new edition of the “I Love Litter Free Hyderabad” awareness board has been installed at Uppal X Road to promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility among citizens. However, the effectiveness of this initiative in creating a litter-free society in Hyderabad remains a topic of discussion.

Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Ajith, a resident of Kondapur, highlighted the importance of cleanliness in urban areas. He stated, “A litter-free environment is essential in every city. However, citizens often disregard awareness programmes and advertisements by government officials. Not everyone is following these initiatives. Nonetheless, these signboards provide hope that future generations will understand the importance of cleanliness. Topics like this should be included in the school syllabus.”

Sai Teja praised the efforts of the Uppal GHMC Circle officials for actively monitoring CCTV footage to identify and penalise those who litter, particularly during nighttime. “The Deputy Commissioner of Uppal is making significant progress,” he said. “The initiative ‘I Love Litter Free Hyderabad’ is a step towards awareness, and there is hope that it will inspire change. We must cultivate this mindset. Nowadays, people litter without fear. Alongside the GHMC Act, the city police should enforce stricter penalties, including imprisonment for those caught littering.”

Shaandaar Hyderabad commended the initiative on social media, stating, “Commendable initiative by @Dc_Ghmc Uppal by installing a motivational message and urging citizens of Hyderabad to support the maintenance of cleanliness. #LitterFreeHyderabad.” They further expressed their commitment, tweeting, “Let’s pledge to keep our surroundings neat and clean. Thanks, @Dc_Ghmc, for the awareness at Uppal X Road. #SwachhtaHiSewa2024.”

Other citizens also voiced their opinions on social media. Syed (@Syed68818) commented, “GHMC Commissioner, awareness and implementation are needed throughout Hyderabad city.” Dr. Jyothi Chowdary Bandi (@Doc_JCB) took a pledge online, saying, “I pledge NOT TO LITTER anything, anytime, anywhere. I pledge TO STOP & OBJECT TO OTHERS littering anything, anytime, anywhere. I pledge TO CARRY BACK LITTER in the absence of bins.”

The Deputy Commissioner of Uppal has recently taken a strong position against littering, monitoring CCTV footage, and successfully fining a violator Rs. 500. A tweet from the department read, “Caught, fined, and connected to the garbage collector. Fine levied ₹500. @SwachhBharatGov @SwachSurvekshan @GHMCOnline. #LitterFreeHyderabad.”

As the campaign progresses, the community is urged to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness and contribute to making Hyderabad a litter-free city.
