Life-sentenced convict throws slipper at judge in Rangareddy District Court

Hyderabad: A convict, sentenced to life imprisonment, threw his slipper at an Additional District Judge in a fit of rage inside an open courtroom at the Rangareddy District Court in LB Nagar on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Sardar Chamkorthi alias Karan Singh, was convicted on February 11 for attacking a police officer. On Thursday, he was produced before the same judge in connection with a 2023 murder case filed against him in Narsingi.
While appearing in court, Karan Singh threw his slipper at the judge under the pretext of airing his grievances, issuing threats in the process. However, the slipper fell short and landed a few feet away from the judge.
The incident caught the escort police off guard, but lawyers in the courtroom intervened, dragging the convict out and beating him before police took him into custody. Tensions rose outside the courtroom as advocates criticized the police for failing to prevent the attack. The Rangareddy District Court Bar Association demanded stricter security measures.
Rangareddy District Court Bar Association President Y Kondal Reddy condemned the police inaction and called for a boycott of court proceedings on Friday, highlighting a serious security lapse.
Following a complaint from court officials, LB Nagar police registered a case against the convict under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Karan Singh, a 19-year-old resident of Rajendernagar, had been convicted for the attack on two police constables while they were trying to arrest him in a murder case. On January 5, 2023, Karan Singh attacked Constables Raju Naik and Vijay with a knife in the Sikh Colony, Yellammabanda area, leaving them with severe injuries. The constables were promptly hospitalized, and Singh was taken into custody the same day.
After a thorough investigation and trial, Singh was found guilty and sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment, with a fine of Rs 15,000.
