Food Safety raid at Katedan unit uncovers infested spices, 8.28 tonnes destroyed

HYDERABAD: A joint inspection by the Central Food Safety team at Shalimar’s food processing facility in Katedan uncovered multiple food safety violations, leading to the seizure and destruction of 8.28 tonnes of contaminated food material.
Officials found insect- and mould-infested copra, larva-contaminated cumin powder, and spice powders stored on the floor and being packed for sale. The inspection also revealed pigeons and droppings inside the manufacturing area.
Food Safety officials noted that workers were handling food products without basic protective gear such as caps, masks and gloves.
Contaminated stock destroyed on site
During the inspection, authorities seized and destroyed 2.28 tonnes of larva-infested cumin powder and 6 tonnes of contaminated copra at the premises.
Officials said the contaminated products posed a potential risk to consumers and were disposed of immediately as part of enforcement action.
Case referred for legal action
The case has been referred for further action under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Officials said stringent measures would be initiated based on the findings of the inspection.
The violations were detected during a joint enforcement drive aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety regulations in manufacturing units across the city.
