Minimally invasive approach avoids open surgery despite uterus enlarging to eight months’ size

HYDERABAD: Surgeons at BirthRight by Rainbow Hospitals, Nanakramguda, have successfully removed 11 large uterine fibroids weighing about 2.7 kg from a 26-year-old woman using advanced laparoscopic techniques, while preserving her uterus and future fertility.
Three of the fibroids were exceptionally large, comparable to the size of a muskmelon, while the remaining were similar to sweet limes. The uterus had expanded to the size of an eight-month pregnancy, making the procedure technically demanding, doctors said.
The surgery was performed by Manasa Badveli, senior consultant gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon at the hospital. The team opted for a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach despite recommendations for open surgery from gynaecologists at other hospitals.
Uterine fibroids commonly affect women of reproductive age and can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and infertility. While complex cases have traditionally required open surgery, advances in laparoscopy now allow select patients to be treated through minimally invasive methods.
Doctors said detailed pre-operative planning using high-resolution MRI enabled precise mapping of the fibroids, minimised surgical risk and ensured preservation of uterine integrity.
“This was a technically demanding case given the number and size of fibroids involved,” Dr. Badveli said. “The uterus had expanded to the size of an eight-month pregnancy, making the surgery particularly challenging. Preserving the uterus and minimising surgical trauma can make a meaningful difference in a young woman’s life, especially when future fertility is a concern.”
The patient recovered well after the procedure and was discharged in stable condition, the hospital said.
