Dangerous driving: Citizens demand better medians at Langar Houz
Tolichowki: Residents near Tapovanam Park are raising concerns over frequent violations of traffic rules at Langar Houz, where individuals are crossing the road through low existing medians, putting themselves and others at risk. TG Citizen recorded a video showing multiple instances of bikes crossing through these low medians and engaging in dangerous behaviour. The video has gone viral, leading to demands for immediate action to prevent potential accidents.
Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, TG Citizen, who wants to be anonymous, stated, “The traffic police in Tolichowki have sent multiple letters to the GHMC team, but no action has been taken.” He said that despite the Station House Officer placing barricades at broken medians, many drivers continue to navigate through them, disregarding the risks posed by oncoming traffic.
He further alleged, “The GHMC team has not responded to the Hyderabad Traffic Police, prompting the station house officer to install barricades in select areas. Yet, people are still finding ways to bypass these measures and cross through broken medians.”
The citizen called for a more robust solution, “Complete grills and barricades should be installed to prevent drivers from using shortcuts. Instant fines must be imposed on those violating traffic rules, as this reckless behaviour could lead to serious accidents and loss of life.”
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the TG citizen voiced his concerns, saying, “Road safety at Tapovanam Park is at risk. Cutting through the median has become a rampant issue and poses a serious threat. While #TeamGHMC seems focused on other priorities, areas like this require immediate attention. I urge @GHMCOnline, @hydcitypolice, and @CommissionrGHMC to prioritise fixing medians.”

In response, the official GHMC handle replied, “Dear Citizen, kindly share the location details, such as ward and circle name, so that the concerned officer can take action.”
Addressing these concerns, the Tolichowki Police Station highlighted the urgent need for improved center medians along the busy route from Bapughat to Necknampur X Road. They noted that the existing median cement blocks are too low and have effectively become level with the road due to repeated resurfacing work, allowing commuters to exploit the gaps for sudden U-turns. This situation has contributed to a significant number of road accidents in the area.
The police further stated that while work has begun on the center median from Langar Houz to Bapughat, additional installations are still pending. They have formally requested the Zonal Commissioner to expedite the necessary improvements to enhance commuter safety and reduce the risk of accidents.
