Hyderabad’s Lamakaan set to host Freedom Film Festival from August 29-31

Lamakaan Freedom Film Festival

Hyderabad: The Freedom Film Festival is set to take place from August 29 to 31, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Lamakaan in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. This event, curated by the renowned documentary filmmaker and media activist Amudhan R.P., aims to showcase various voices advocating for the protection of freedom.

The festival announcement was made via the official Instagram handle of Lamakaan (@lamakaan_open_cultural_space), which described the festival as a reflection on the urgent discourse surrounding freedom and its current challenges.

Amudhan R.P., born in 1971 in Madurai, is renowned for his extensive work in documentary filmmaking and media activism. He is the co-founder of Marupakkam, a media activism group dedicated to creating documentaries and organising screenings, film festivals, and media workshops in and around Madurai.

Since 1997, Amudhan has been actively involved in documenting critical social issues, with notable works including two trilogies on caste and nuclear radiation. His film ‘Shit’ earned the Best Film Award at the One Billion Eyes Film Festival in 2005 and the National Jury Award at the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in 2006.

Additionally, Amudhan R.P. founded the Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival in 1998, and he has been its organiser ever since. His contributions to the field have been widely recognised, including the Best Film Award at the One Billion Eyes Film Festival and the National Jury Award at MIFF.

Lamakaan is a lively open cultural center and non-profit organisation that has been promoting arts and cultural exchange since it was established in March 2010. It was founded by Ashhar Farhan, Humera Ahmed, Biju Mathew, and Elahe Hiptoola. Lamakaan provides a flexible space for a variety of events, including arts, literature, theater, music, and debates.

The venue hosts a wide variety of events, including Pecha Kucha sessions, concerts featuring renowned artists like the Warsi Brothers, Vittal Rao, and Ateeq Hussain Khan, book releases, plays, and seminars. Lamakaan also coordinates Wikipedia Meetups and is a hub for multiple theater groups, such as Samahaara, Sutradhar, Manch Theatre, Nishumbita, Evam, Shudrka, and Taher Ali Baig Productions.
