Female giraffe to join Nehru Zoo soon
HYDERABAD: The Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad is set to welcome a female giraffe soon, to accompany the lone male giraffe, Sunny.
Zoo officials said arrangements are being made to bring the female giraffe from the Mysuru Zoo under an animal exchange programme. In return, the Hyderabad zoo will send a rhinoceros to Mysuru. The giraffe, known for its long neck and distinctive patterns, is expected to add to the zoo’s attraction for visitors.
Recently, the zoo received three zebras two females and one male from Gujarat through the Reliance Foundation under an animal exchange programme with the Radhakrishna Trust. The Hyderabad zoo gave 20 mouse deer in exchange.
The arrival of zebras after 35 years has drawn enthusiastic crowds, with the animals now on public display in their enclosure.
Focus on animal health
The Nehru Zoological Park currently houses 199 species, including 1,361 birds, 328 reptiles and 518 other animals. The new additions are expected to increase this number further.
Zoo officials said they are giving special attention to animal health and nutrition. Each species is fed a diet designed by veterinarians based on its specific nutritional and breeding needs. A dedicated veterinary team continuously monitors the animals’ health to ensure proper care and welfare.
