Tribal villagers meeting to ban dowry in Kumram Bheem Asifabad

ASIFABAD: Tribal villages in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district have resolved to ban dowry in marriages across Jainoor, Sirpur (U), and Lingapur mandals. More than 20 villages have adopted the decision, setting an example for others.

Traditional practices replace costly ceremonies

Earlier, tribal weddings were simple community events held among family members and villagers, with minimal expenses and adherence to traditions. Over time, the practice of giving dowry and expensive gifts entered these communities.

Items such as utensils, cupboards, sofa sets, beds, decorative materials, costly clothing, and even motorcycles began to be given. Comparisons over gifts led to disputes in some cases.

Debt burden on poor families

The growing competition in dowry and gifts increased financial pressure on poor families. Many took loans for weddings and struggled to repay them.

To address this, several villages have passed resolutions banning dowry and gifts in marriages. Instead, villagers collect contributions to support the family conducting the wedding.

This system is being implemented in multiple villages across Jainoor, Sirpur (U), and Lingapur mandals.

Community unity strengthened

“Banning dowry decisions taken by village elders are preserving unity. There will be no difference between rich and poor. Villagers have come forward unanimously, and contributions from every family provide financial support,” said Pendor Ganapath Rao, sarpanch of Burnoor village in Jainoor mandal.

Model for future generations

“The decisions taken by elders in tribal villages will serve as an example for future generations. We are happy to adopt a support system in our village. If extended to other events, it will reduce the financial burden on poor families,” said Atram Anand Rao.

Village elders said the move is helping restore traditional values in tribal society.
