Kukatpally police arrest private employee in gold ring theft case

HYDERABAD: Kukatpally police arrested a man for allegedly stealing gold rings from jewellery stores in Kukatpally and Panjagutta in January and February 2026.

Based on complaints from CMR Shopping Mall and Malabar Gold outlets, police registered cases numbered 229/2026 and 230/2026 under Sections 318(2) and 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and began an inquiry.

According to complainants, the accused visited a jewellery store in A.S. Raju Nagar, Kukatpally, at about 7 pm on January 23, 2026, and another outlet at around 8 pm on February 2, 2026. He asked sales staff to show gold rings, diverted their attention and replaced original rings in the tray with imitation gold rings before leaving the shop.

Police said he used a similar method at a CMR Shopping Mall in Panjagutta. A separate case numbered 177/2026 under Sections 305(a) and 318(4) of the BNS was registered at Panjagutta police station.

Crime staff at Kukatpally police station analysed closed-circuit television footage, collected technical evidence and conducted field-level inquiries. The team arrested the accused during the investigation.

Police seized three gold rings weighing about 10 grams, 14 grams and 8 grams in connection with the cases.

The accused was identified as Merugu Sagar, 30, a private employee residing at Jai Lakshmi Nagar Colony, Road No. 7, Beeramguda in Ameenpur mandal of Sangareddy district. His native place is Rajiv Nagar in Godavarikhani of Peddapalli district.

Under the supervision of Kukatpally Station House Officer K. Venkata Subba Rao, Sub-Inspector Ravinder Reddy, head constables Ravinder and Amruth Rao, and police constables Krishna, Azaam and Nagarjuna played key roles in the arrest, police said.
