Who Is Kondru Sanjay Murthy? First Telugu officer appointed as India’s Comptroller and Auditor General

Hyderabad: Kondru Sanjay Murthy, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from Andhra Pradesh, has been appointed as India’s 15th Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). The appointment, made by President Draupadi Murmu, was announced by the Ministry of Finance on November 18, 2024.

Kondru Sanjay Murthy, who was due to retire next month, takes over the prestigious role from Girish Chandra Murmu, whose term is set to conclude. The appointment comes in recognition of Kondru Sanjay Murthy’s distinguished career in civil services, particularly in his recent role as Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, where he played a key role in the implementation of the New Education Policy.

A native of Andhra Pradesh, Kondru Sanjay Murthy is the first person from the Telugu-speaking community to hold the office of Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). Born on December 24, 1964, Sanjay Murthy completed his engineering degree in mechanical engineering before joining the IAS in 1989, under the Himachal Pradesh cadre. Over the years, he has served in various high-level administrative roles, including his tenure as Secretary in the Ministry of Higher Education since September 2021.

Sanjay Murthy is the son of K.S.R. Murthy, a former Member of Parliament from Amalapuram and an ex-IAS officer who served at the level of Secretary in the central government.

As the new CAG, Murthy will oversee the financial auditing and accountability of government operations. The CAG is a critical constitutional position responsible for ensuring the transparency and proper use of public funds. According to the provisions of the office, Kondru Sanjay Murthy can hold the post for a maximum of six years or until the age of 65.
