Kondapur’s Kudikunta Lake becomes mosquito breeding hotspot; Residents urge action

Hyderabad: Residents of Kondapur, located near Kudikunta Lake, are expressing concerns over a worsening mosquito problem that has transformed the area into a breeding ground. Despite their attempts to manage the issue, the community is now experiencing “mosquito tornadoes,” making it nearly impossible to go outside.
According to residents, the main cause of the problem is the unchecked growth of water hyacinth on the lake, which has been left unattended for 4 to 5 months. This has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Rajeev Varma, a resident of Kondapur, told Hyderabad Mail, “We can’t even step outside our homes due to the swarming mosquitoes around Kudikunta Lake. Despite spending our own money on fogging, the situation persists.” He added that the water hyacinth, which has been left uncleaned for months, is exacerbating the problem.
Residents have raised concerns about the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) ‘s lack of effective intervention, and some have taken to social media to draw attention to the issue.
On X (formerly Twitter), Resident Siva Nagendra called for urgent action, stating, “Kudikunta Lake, Kondapur, has turned into a mosquito-infested swamp, causing mosquito tornadoes. Communities around are suffering, and GHMC’s superficial fogging is not helpful. Urgent intervention is needed.”
Rajeev Varma also urged local officials to take immediate action, pointing out that a water hyacinth cleaning machine has been stationed at the lake for over a month without any cleaning taking place.
Residents are now calling for the GHMC Commissioner and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to address the issue promptly.
