HYDERABAD: Income Tax officials seized 1.4 kg of gold ornaments worth around ₹2.3 crore from Telangana Hockey Association president Konda Vijay Kumar after he failed to explain the source of funds during an interception at Delhi airport.

Vijay Kumar, also known as ‘Bangaru Babu’, was travelling from Hyderabad to Delhi on Thursday evening to attend a sports event. Officials, with assistance from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, stopped him at the airport. He was wearing the gold ornaments at the time.

Officials question him, examine financial records

Sources said officials examined his financial records and collected details of his assets as part of a tax compliance probe. He was carrying nearly 2 kg of gold, but officials seized 1.4 kg after he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.

Officials questioned him for several hours and later allowed him to attend the event in Delhi. They directed him to appear before the Income Tax department for further inquiry.

Officials said the final outcome, including the status of the seized gold, will depend on the investigation and tax assessment.

Vijay Kumar claims assets are documented

Vijay Kumar said his income and assets are fully documented and that he will cooperate with the authorities.

“They seized six gold articles and released three after I produced bills. CISF personnel stopped me due to the election season. I had declared the gold in Hyderabad,” he said.

He is also a member of the Telangana Olympic Association.
