Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders: SRH Aim to Bounce Back

HYDERABAD: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will aim to revive their struggling spin attack against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday. Both teams look to bounce back after opening losses.
This match begins a crucial home stretch for KKR. They will play three games in seven days, followed by another on April 19. After that, the Kolkata leg pauses for nearly a month due to assembly polls. Four away matches follow, increasing the pressure to build early momentum.
KKR have a strong record at Eden Gardens, with 54 wins in 95 matches since 2008. However, concerns around bowling depth have clouded their campaign.
Spin Duo Under Scrutiny After Poor Start
KKR’s bowling unit has suffered due to injuries and availability issues. Harshit Rana and Akash Deep remain sidelined. Matheesha Pathirana is still waiting for clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket. Cameron Green is playing only as a batter.
These gaps hurt KKR in their opener against Mumbai Indians. They failed to defend a total of 220. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton added 148 runs in just 72 balls, exposing the weak new-ball attack.
The bigger worry is the spin department. Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy failed to make an impact. Chakravarthy conceded 48 runs without a wicket. Narine bowled only three overs and came in after the Powerplay.
Team Balance a Concern for Kolkata
Cameron Green scored 18 off 10 balls but did not bowl due to workload management. This limits KKR’s balance and flexibility.
The team may consider Rovman Powell as an option. The West Indian scored 149 runs in the T20 World Cup at a strike rate of 147.52. He also has good memories at Eden Gardens, including an unbeaten 34 off 19 against India.
Despite KKR’s request for a turning track, the pitch is expected to stay balanced. Both pacers and spinners should get some assistance. A score around 200 could prove competitive.
KKR will also review skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s batting approach. He started strongly against Mumbai, scoring 36 off 18 balls. However, his strike rate dropped in the middle overs. He added 31 runs off 22 balls without hitting a boundary, slowing the innings.
SRH Look to Bounce Back After RCB Loss
Sunrisers Hyderabad also need a quick turnaround after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Their strong top order failed to deliver consistently.
Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Travis Head will need to step up after early dismissals in the opener.
SRH’s bowling unit also struggled. They could not defend a total of 201. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jaydev Unadkat, Harshal Patel, and Eshan Malinga failed to contain the opposition.
Cummins’ Absence Hurts SRH Attack
The absence of Pat Cummins has weakened SRH’s bowling attack. He is yet to regain full fitness but has resumed bowling in the nets. The team expects him to return later in the season.
