100 dogs allegedly poisoned to death in Jannaram village; police book sarpanch, secretary

HYDERABAD: Nearly 100 dogs, including stray and pet animals, were allegedly poisoned in Kishtapur village of Jannaram mandal about a week ago. Police have registered a case against the village sarpanch and the panchayat secretary for their alleged involvement.
Police booked sarpanch Naresh and the village secretary under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators say they administered poisonous injections to the dogs and buried the bodies on March 7 and 8.
Goutham Adulapuram, an activist with the Stray Animal Foundation of India in Karimnagar, filed the complaint. Acting on it, police registered a case on Sunday and began an investigation.
According to police, the sarpanch and the secretary hired two persons to kill the dogs. They reportedly claimed stray dogs had attacked residents frequently.
However, the action led to the deaths of several pet dogs as well. The accused allegedly buried many carcasses on the banks of the Godavari river on the village outskirts.
Some villagers later realised their pet dogs were missing and alerted the activist.
Adulapuram approached officials of the Ramagundam Police Commissionerate after authorities initially failed to respond to his complaint. He also contacted Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy.
Following the representation, the DGP directed local police to register a case and conduct a detailed probe. Police are continuing the investigation.
