KIMS doctors perform rare robotic mitral valve surgery on 37-year-old patient
HYDERABAD: Doctors at KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, have successfully performed a rare robotic mitral valve surgery on a 37-year-old man from Rajahmundry. The procedure offers a minimally invasive alternative to conventional open-heart surgery.
Patient diagnosed with severe rheumatic heart disease
The patient, an accountant with a prawn export company, suffered from severe mitral stenosis caused by rheumatic heart disease. The disease narrowed and thickened his mitral valve. As a result, blood flow between the upper and lower left chambers of the heart slowed down and put extra strain on the heart.
Chief cardiac surgeon Dr Nisarga led the five-hour robotic surgery on July 23.
Keyhole surgery helps faster recovery
Instead of opening the breastbone, the surgical team performed the operation through small keyhole cuts between the ribs.
Dr Nisarga said the robotic approach caused less trauma to the body. It reduced bleeding, pain and the risk of infection. Doctors removed the patient from ventilator support within hours. He walked independently the next day.
Robotic heart surgery expanding in Hyderabad
Dr Nisarga said robotic heart surgery is still uncommon in Hyderabad. However, it offers major benefits, especially for younger patients. The technique avoids a large chest incision and helps patients recover faster, both physically and mentally.
Cardiac surgeon Dr Vineeth joined the procedure along with anaesthesiologists Dr Divya, Dr Gorintha and Dr Bhavani. Specialised heart-lung machine operators also supported the surgery.
Hospital officials said the successful operation highlights the growing use of robotic technology in advanced cardiac care in Hyderabad.
