Doctors at KIMS Cuddles Hospital, Kondapur, save Raipur boy from rare brain infection

Hyderabad: The doctors at KIMS Cuddles Hospital in Kondapur, Hyderabad, have successfully treated a 12-year-old boy from Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The boy was suffering from a rare brain infection. This condition led to severe symptoms, including high fever, seizures, and increased brain pressure. These symptoms eventually caused him to lose recognition of his own parents.
Initially, he was admitted to a local hospital in Raipur, and the boy’s condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting the local medical team to seek advanced care at KIMS Cuddles Hospital, Hyderabad.
Dr. Parag Dekate, Clinical Director of the Pediatrics Department and Head of the Pediatric ICU at KIMS Cuddles, explained the case, saying, “The boy was experiencing severe fever, seizures, and rising brain pressure. Local doctors contacted us for more advanced treatment options. By the time we arrived in Raipur, his condition had worsened significantly with frequent seizures, low blood pressure, and difficulty breathing.”
Dr. Parag Dekate further said, “We promptly intubated him to stabilise his breathing, administered medications to manage brain pressure and seizures, and airlifted him to Hyderabad. During his nine-day stay here, he experienced further complications, including increased brain pressure and more seizures, which we addressed with targeted medications.”
The infection, which has been identified as Rickettsial with a complication known as MERS, is extremely rare in the Raipur region. The boy also developed issues with his liver and kidneys, which were successfully treated by the hospital’s multidisciplinary team. By the fourth day of his treatment, he was removed from the ventilator, and by the ninth day, he had fully recovered and was discharged.
Dr. Avinash and Dr. Kalyan, Pediatric Intensivists at KIMS Cuddles, highlighted the hospital’s capability to manage critical cases from across the country, particularly where advanced medical facilities may be limited.
The team that managed the case included Dr. Prabhjot, Dr. Jayanth Krishna (Pediatric Neurologist), Dr. Pandu (Pediatric Gastroenterologist), Dr. Mounika (Pediatric Nephrologist), and Dr. Pratik Y Patil (Infectious Diseases Specialist).
Dr. Parag spoke about the importance of air ambulances despite their high cost, “Air ambulances can be expensive, but nothing is more valuable than life. Timely and effective treatment at specialised centers is crucial. This was our second successful case involving a critically ill child transported by air, the first being a baby who required ECMO support during transit. We recently completed one of the longest Road ECMO transports in the world, a nine-hour journey from Nagpur, creating an advanced extracorporeal unit on the road. KIMS Cuddles has a history of effectively managing complex cases like these.”
