Khammam couple seek house for disabled son

KHAMMAM: A couple in Khammam has been struggling for years to secure a house, as landlords refuse to rent out homes after seeing their bedridden son.
“Even if you visit many hospitals, there is no use. Your son’s brain will not develop. This condition is present from birth. He will remain bedridden all his life,” doctors had told them. Despite this, the parents chose not to give up hope. “We will care for him as long as he lives,” they said.
However, their situation has worsened as no one is willing to rent them a house. Even when they manage to get accommodation, they are asked to vacate within a few days.
Rayala Ramesh and Sulochana, residents of Gopalapeta in Tallada mandal of Khammam district, migrated to Khammam town 20 years ago. They have two sons. Their younger son, Ajay, 18, suffers from a brain development disorder and is fully disabled.
Ajay is confined to bed and cannot swallow food properly. His mother spends hours feeding him small quantities. Due to inadequate nutrition, his body has become extremely weak. The family spends ₹7,000 to ₹8,000 every month on medicines to provide nutrients.
Ramesh supports the family through daily wage work. Due to their son’s condition, landlords refuse to rent out homes, leaving the family in distress.
When Gautam was the Khammam Collector, he recommended housing support for the family. However, revenue officials did not act on it. The couple has been visiting the Collectorate every week, appealing to officials, but without success.
Ramesh and Sulochana urged authorities to allot them a house and enable them to live with dignity.
