Khairatabad bypoll notification awaits HC decision
HYDERABAD: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has told the Telangana High Court that it will not notify a by-election to the Khairatabad Assembly constituency until Congress leader P Vijaya Reddy’s election petition is finally disposed of.
The Khairatabad seat fell vacant following the disqualification of Danam Nagender as an MLA. The Telangana High Court disqualified Nagender from the Assembly with effect from April 23, 2024, rendering the seat vacant.
An election petition filed by Vijaya Reddy in connection with the constituency is pending before the court. She has now approached the High Court seeking that the ECI withhold the bypoll notification until a final judgment is delivered on the petition.
The ECI informed the court that it would not notify the bypoll until the petition is finally decided, according to the information available.
The High Court’s decision in the next hearing will determine the course of the Khairatabad by-election.
