HYDERABAD: Telangana Jagruti president Kalvakuntla Kavitha is set to formally launch a new political party on April 25, according to party sources. Clarity has emerged on the party’s name, symbol and launch date.

Sources said the party will be named Telangana Praja Jagruti. The organisation is expected to apply to the Election Commission of India seeking ‘Dharmaganta’ as its election symbol.

Kavitha is likely to announce details on Friday, April 4, during Sri Rama Navami celebrations at the Telangana Jagruti office in Nizamabad. Party leaders said she will outline the party’s agenda and indicate the Assembly segment from which she plans to contest.

Kavitha has also demanded that women from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) be given a sub-quota within the proposed 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures. In a statement issued on Wednesday, she said social justice must be ensured along with political representation.

Her remarks come amid indications that the Union government may introduce the women’s reservation bill in the ongoing Lok Sabha session. Kavitha said excluding OBC women from the proposed quota would amount to “cheating the majority of the population”.

She said participation of OBC women is essential to achieve social equality in legislatures. Kavitha warned that if reservations are implemented without an OBC quota, another agitation would be launched. She added that political parties and women’s organisations had earlier united to hold a protest in Delhi for the women’s bill and similar efforts would be made again if needed.
