MULUGU: The Karregutta forest region in Telangana has been declared free of Maoist influence after security forces secured full control under “Operation Kagar”, officials said on Tuesday.

Director General of Police B Shivadhar Reddy said the once-sensitive zone is now a “Maoist-free area”. He laid the foundation stone for a police outpost at Karregutta Hills in Pamunuru village of Venkatapuram mandal to strengthen security presence in the tribal belt.

Road connectivity improves access to remote tribal belt

Authorities have begun focusing on long-term development in the region. A 13 km road from Wazeedu to Pamunuru through the Karregutta stretch has been completed, improving access to the remote terrain.

Another 15 km stretch is under construction and is expected to be completed within two months. Officials said the road network will enhance connectivity between Telangana and neighbouring Chhattisgarh.

Police outpost, welfare measures mark next development phase

During the visit, officials distributed essential commodities, an autorickshaw and a two-wheeler to seven tribal families in Pamunuru. The vehicles will support mobility across several hamlets in the Karregutta region.

As part of the third phase of the Road Safety Programme, the “Arrive Alive” campaign was conducted, drawing around 3,000 participants. The DGP distributed 200 helmets and urged adherence to road safety norms. A free eye check-up camp for motorists was also organised.

The DGP interacted with tribal families and assured continued administrative support. He encouraged residents to approach police and revenue officials for assistance.

Officials highlight eco-tourism potential in hill forest region

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests C Suvarna said Karreguttalu, one of the highest hill regions in Telangana, holds strong potential for eco-tourism.

She said improved accessibility, achieved through coordination between forest and revenue departments, has opened up the region while adhering to environmental norms. Plans are underway to beautify the hilltop landscape and promote sustainable livelihoods, including a women-led nursery inaugurated at Mormoru.

“We are committed to developing Karregutta as an eco-tourism destination. It can create opportunities for local youth and women,” she said.

Officials also indicated that improved infrastructure could support future industrial or power projects, subject to government policy.

Reiterating the security situation, the DGP said there is no active Maoist presence in the area. He added that around six underground Maoists are gradually establishing contact with the police and appealed to them to surrender.

Meanwhile, a minor accident occurred during a convoy trial run near Venkatapuram mandal. A police vehicle collided with another vehicle, but around 10 personnel involved escaped unhurt.
