Karimnagar woman survives 21 hours in well after robbery
KARIMNAGAR: A 55-year-old woman survived nearly 21 hours inside an agricultural well after an unidentified man allegedly robbed her of her gold ornaments and cash before pushing her into the well at Nustulapur village in Thimmapur mandal of Karimnagar district.
Labourer lured with promise of work
According to police, Gangadhara Lakshmi, 55, of Kisannagar, works as a daily wage labourer. On Wednesday, her son Sandeep dropped her at the labour pick-up point near Tower Circle in Karimnagar. An unidentified man approached her, claiming he had work, and took her to an agricultural well on the outskirts of Nustulapur village.
Police said the man threatened Lakshmi, snatched about 0.5 grams of gold ornaments and ₹4,000 in cash, and pushed her into the well at around 11 am. When she managed to hold on to a rope inside the well, the accused allegedly cut it before fleeing.
Woman clings to pipe through the night
Lakshmi kept herself afloat by swimming and holding on to a motor pipe throughout the night.
When she did not return home, her sons Satish and Sandeep lodged a missing complaint at the Karimnagar III Town police station. Police traced the location of her mobile phone and searched the area, but could not find her.
At around 7 am on Thursday, the owner of the well heard cries for help while passing by. He looked into the well and found Lakshmi trapped inside. Villagers were alerted and rescued her.
Police have registered a case and launched efforts to identify and apprehend the accused.
