Karimnagar elderly couple robbed after midnight attack
KARIMNAGAR: Eight armed men allegedly attacked an elderly couple and their two daughters before robbing them of 54 tolas of gold, 30 tolas of silver ornaments and ₹25 lakh in cash at their house in Bhagatnagar, Kothapalli, on Tuesday night.
According to police and the victims, MD Azmath Ali, 80, and Mahamuda Begum, 65, own several properties in Karimnagar. The couple has three sons and four daughters. Two daughters had recently been staying with their parents because of an ongoing family property dispute.
At around 12.30 am, Azmath Ali stepped out to switch off the lights outside the house. Police said eight men, who had been waiting in the corridor, threatened him with firearms and knives before assaulting him. They dragged him into the hall, tied the hands and legs of the elderly couple and their two daughters, and confined them.
The assailants allegedly took away ₹25 lakh in cash kept in an almirah, 54 tolas of gold jewellery, 30 tolas of silver ornaments and two high-end mobile phones. They later locked the victims inside a room and fled on two motorcycles parked by tenants in the building.
Police recovered a dummy gun that the robbers allegedly left behind while escaping.
The daughters raised an alarm after neighbours helped them open the room, following which police were alerted.
Investigators said the suspects stopped at a fuel station near the Lake police station. They filled petrol in one motorcycle but failed to refuel the second after being unable to open its fuel tank. Five people were seen on the two motorcycles. Police believe they travelled towards Warangal before abandoning the vehicles near the SRSP canal at Peddapapaiahpalli in Huzurabad mandal.
Azmath Ali told police he suspects his elder son-in-law, who is from Uttar Pradesh, because of the ongoing property dispute. He also stated that he had lodged a complaint on June 17 after the son-in-law allegedly took away the family’s car without informing them.
Police Commissioner Gaush Alam visited the scene and reviewed the investigation. Police have formed eight teams to trace the suspects.
