Police search Kamareddy pond after father pushes daughters into water

TELANGANA: A man allegedly pushed his three daughters into a pond in Kamareddy town, leading to the death of two children while another remains missing, police said.

Police identified the accused as Ismail, a resident of RB Nagar in Kamareddy. He and his wife Shabina have three daughters Sheephat (8), Ayat (7), and Mariam (5). Ismail works as an auto-rickshaw driver, while Shabina works as a daily wage labourer.

Debt burden cited in killing of three young girls

According to police, the incident came to light after Shabina returned home from work and could not find the children. She lodged a complaint at the Kamareddy town police station on Saturday afternoon.

Police formed three teams and began an inquiry. During questioning, Ismail initially told officers he had taken the children to a hotel to buy them dosas. He said he later asked them to return home as he received a customer for his auto-rickshaw.

However, police found discrepancies between his statement and closed-circuit television camera footage. During further questioning, he admitted that he had pushed the children into the Pedda Cheruvu pond.

Two bodies recovered; search continues for eldest child

Police said Ismail told investigators he first pushed his second daughter into the water, followed by the youngest, and then the eldest child. He remained at the spot for about half an hour to ensure they had died.

He reportedly told police he was under debt of more than ₹5 lakh and decided to kill the children. He also said he had planned to die by suicide.

Police recovered the bodies of the second and third daughters on Saturday night. Search operations are continuing to trace the eldest child.

Police have taken Ismail into custody and further investigation is under way.
