Kakatiya University Rat Attack Leaves 14 Students Injured Sparks Campus Safety Concerns

HYDERABAD: Fourteen female students were injured after rats bit them at the Sammakka–Sarakka hostel of Kakatiya University in Hanamkonda on Monday night, raising fresh concerns over sanitation and campus safety.
The incident has renewed scrutiny of long-standing complaints about poor hygiene and weak medical support at the university.
Students allege denial of vaccines
When the injured students went to the campus health centre, staff allegedly told them that essential medicines, including tetanus toxoid and anti-rabies vaccines, were not available.
Students then sought treatment at private clinics at their own expense. They said the university lacks a proper system to handle medical emergencies, especially at night.
Recurring issue, say students
Students pointed out that this is not an isolated case. Last year, rats bit two students at the Padmakshi Ladies Hostel while they were asleep.
They alleged that the administration has failed to act despite repeated complaints. According to them, poor sanitation and unused materials piled up in vacant rooms have created breeding grounds for rodents. They also said rats often damage books, bags, and clothes.
Administration promises action
University officials said they have started steps to improve sanitation and control the rodent problem, but they have not announced a timeline.
Student representatives have demanded immediate cleaning of hostels, a permanent pest control system, and 24/7 availability of medical staff and vaccines on campus.
