HYDERABAD: South Central Railway has initiated steps to modernise and expand Kachiguda railway station, one of Hyderabad’s key rail hubs, with a focus on building additional platforms to meet rising demand.

Focus on land for expansion

Officials of the Hyderabad division have proposed acquiring land from the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation to facilitate construction of new platforms. Discussions have been held with senior RTC officials, with Railways offering alternative land in exchange.

Passenger pressure mounts

Passenger traffic at the station has increased steadily due to the growth of the city and the number of local MMTS and express services. Existing platforms, stabling lines and pit lines are proving inadequate, prompting the expansion plan.

Ten acres key to project

The RTC owns about 10 acres of land adjoining the station. If transferred to Railways, the land would enable large-scale expansion and the construction of new platforms, meeting future requirements for several decades. Proposals have already been exchanged, officials said. Once implemented, the station’s layout is expected to change significantly.

Key numbers at a glance

  • Daily trains: 100+

  • Daily passengers: 55,000

  • Peak days (festivals, weekends): 60,000–65,000

  • Proposed platforms after expansion: 10
