HYDERABAD: The Supreme Court said husbands must participate in routine domestic work such as cooking, cleaning and managing household tasks. The bench observed that a wife cannot be treated as unpaid domestic help within marriage.

Observations come during hearing of ongoing marital disputes case

Hearing a matter related to marital disputes, a bench led by Justice B V Nagarathna urged men to change their attitudes in line with evolving social realities. The court said traditional notions that assign all household duties to women are inconsistent with contemporary family life.

The bench told the husband, “You married a life partner, not a servant.” It added that emotional and practical support between spouses is necessary for sustaining marital relationships.

The court noted that unequal sharing of domestic responsibilities often leads to friction and litigation between couples. It emphasised that mutual participation in household chores can strengthen understanding and stability within families.

The observations were made while examining issues arising from a matrimonial dispute before the court. The bench clarified that marriage involves cooperation, dignity and equal contribution from both partners.
