Rahel surrenders in Jubilee Hills hit-and-run

HYDERABAD: Rahel, son of former MLA Shakeel, surrendered before Jubilee Hills police in connection with a 2022 hit-and-run case that left an infant dead and two others seriously injured.
The incident occurred on Road No. 45 in Jubilee Hills. Police said the vehicle, allegedly driven rashly, hit pedestrians, killing a child aged below one year. Two others sustained severe injuries.
Attempts to shield accused alleged in earlier probe
Investigators earlier suspected attempts to shield the accused by projecting another person as the driver. Police sources said similar attempts were made in a separate 2023 case in which a car crashed into the Praja Bhavan gates.
In that case, a different individual was shown as the driver and arrested, while Rahel was not named initially. During the probe, Panjagutta Circle Inspector Durgarao was suspended after senior officers found his role in misrepresenting the accused.
Accused fled to Dubai, returns after court orders
After the 2022 accident, Rahel left for Dubai and remained away. Following court directions, Jubilee Hills police reopened the case and filed submissions before the High Court.
During the reinvestigation, police established that Rahel was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. As efforts intensified to arrest him, Rahel surrendered before the police.
