HYDERABAD: Road excavation and underground drainage works taken up by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in Jubilee Hills have slowed down considerably, leaving stretches dug up for days and disrupting daily movement across several colonies ahead of the by-poll.

The works, launched days before the by-poll, have affected SBH Colony, Kamalapuri Colony, Shalivahana Nagar Colony, LIC Colony, the main stretch near Sri Satya Sai Nigamagamam, and pockets of Yellareddyguda.

Residents said trenches remain open, roads are narrowed, and traffic is frequently blocked. Many families find it difficult to either walk or drive through their neighbourhoods. Several residents expressed concerns about children and elderly members navigating uneven surfaces without proper alternative pathways.

A group of residents from Kamalapuri Colony, SBH Colony and LIC Colony told Telangana Today that the slow pace of both road repairs and drainage installation is disrupting daily routines. One resident, Jyothsna, said the uncertainty over timelines has added to the inconvenience. “We welcome GHMC’s move to lay new CC roads, but daily life has been affected as roads remain dug up. We are worried at the lack of a clear timeline,” she said.

On the main stretch near Sri Satya Sai Nigamagamam in Sri Nagar Colony, deep excavation for underground drainage has almost blocked passage. The road is used every day by commuters travelling towards Punjagutta Metro Station and the Jubilee Hills check-post.

GHMC officials attributed the delays to night-time work schedules and interruptions caused by campaign vehicles and padayatras during the by-poll period. “We aim to complete all works ahead of the Sankranthi festival,” a senior official from the engineering wing said.
