Mosquito Menace, Urban Flooding Continue To Trouble Jubilee Hills Residents

HYDERABAD: Issues in the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency vary widely across localities, influenced by geography and economic profile. Residents of Shaikpet division said the mosquito menace was rampant due to several open drains, while those in Yousufguda, Borabanda, and Erragadda cited frequent urban flooding as their major concern.

Residents flag poor sanitation, flooding issues

“Whether it’s commercial spaces or residential houses, people in OU Colony, Shaikpet, have learnt to live with closed windows throughout the year,” said Kalyan Yadav, a private employee. Locals said waterlogging is often followed by sewage overflow, creating unhygienic conditions and illness during the rainy season.

In Erragadda, residents of four housing societies have raised objections to a newly proposed graveyard in their area.

Irregular water supply adds to woes

The Jubilee Hills constituency, with over 4 lakh voters, includes six full divisions—Shaikpet, Yousufguda, Vengal Rao Nagar, Rahmathnagar, Borabanda, and Erragadda—along with parts of Venkateshwara Colony and Somajiguda.

Apart from flooding, residents said irregular drinking water supply was another major problem, especially in rocky areas. “Houses built on higher ground receive very low pressure,” residents said. People in low-lying and slum areas complained that they face both heavy rain and water scarcity.

“Water mixed with sewage often drains into low-lying areas. In Krishnanagar Colony, rainwater has gushed into homes several times,” said a local resident.

Civic works sanctioned, say officials

Shaikpet corporator Mohammed Rashed Farazuddin of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen said several civic works had been sanctioned. “To control mosquito menace, a series of entomology activities have been taken up and are under way,” he said.

Some residents of Borabanda said their houses were unregistered and bought through notary agreements. “Given this, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation town planning officials should not threaten us with enforcement action. We have no provision to obtain building permits in the first place,” said one resident.

Road works have stalled in several colonies, including S A Colony in Tolichowki, due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct in the Jubilee Hills constituency. Residents have also urged the government to shift the dumping yard that falls under the constituency limits.
