Johns Hopkins University honours Dr. Nageshwar Reddy of AIG Hospitals with Prestigious Captain’s Chair

HYDERABAD: AIG (Asian Institute of Gastroenterology) Hospitals celebrates a milestone as its Chairman, Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy, receives the esteemed Captain’s Chair from Johns Hopkins University on Sunday (July 21). This honor, presented by Prof. Anne Marie Lennon, acknowledges Dr. Reddy’s groundbreaking work in gastroenterology. Reddy is the founder of AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad. Previously he had received Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards.

A tradition of excellence

The Captain’s Chair holds significant historical precedence. Sir William Osler, founding professor of Johns Hopkins University in 1874, started this tradition. Sir Osler, known for his transformative contributions to medical education, began presenting the Captain’s Chair to distinguished faculty and alumni. This gesture honors their remarkable achievements and lasting impact on the medical community.  John Hopkins School of Medicine was founded in the year of 1893. From then onwards it is consistently ranking among the top medical schools in the United States of America and in the world.

Prof. Lennon praised Dr. Reddy, stating, “Dr. Reddy’s pioneering work in gastroenterology epitomizes the spirit of innovation and excellence that Johns Hopkins stands for. The presentation of the Captain’s Chair is a testament to his enduring contributions to medical research and education.”

Captain’s Chair is crafted from solid maple hardwood, the Captain’s Chair embodies a rich legacy of academic excellence and tradition. Its multi-step finish and durable lacquer topcoat ensure timeless beauty and resilience. The chair features a satin black body, hand-painted gold beading, and a steam-bent scrolled-top crown in cherry finish, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship.

Dr. Reddy’s career has significantly influenced clinical practices and academic scholarship worldwide. His dedication to advancing gastroenterology has earned him this prestigious recognition. Receiving the Captain’s Chair highlights his alignment with the values and aspirations upheld by Johns Hopkins University.
