Hyderabad traffic police warning against vehicle number plate tampering

HYDERABAD: D. Joel Davis, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad City, warned that altering or tampering with vehicle number plates is a serious offence and will attract strict criminal action. He said the Chaderghat police arrested a man for changing his vehicle number plate, causing repeated harassment to another motorist.

Tampering case detected

Police said the accused, Syed Aliuddin of Malakpet, deliberately altered his two-wheeler’s original registration number TS11EZ2936 to TS11EZ2836. The fraud came to light after the genuine owner, Faheem Ali, complained that repeated traffic challans were being issued against his vehicle.

23 challans wrongly issued

Due to the accused’s violations, 23 challans were wrongly recorded against the original vehicle owner, police said.

Case booked under BNS and MV Act

An FIR (No. 48/2026) was registered at Chaderghat police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 319(2) and 318(4) and Motor Vehicles Act Sections 158 and 177.

Police said such cases are being detected efficiently using CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras across the city.

Reiterating the warning, Davis said the use of fake or altered number plates is a punishable offence and traffic police will maintain continuous surveillance.
