Jiyaguda residents alarmed over black, contaminated water supply

Jiyaguda Residents Alarmed Over Black, Contaminated Water Supply

HYDERABAD: Residents of the Thakur Panch locality in Jiyaguda are grappling with black, contaminated water flowing from household taps, raising serious health concerns for an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people in the area, according to social activist Aadala Pranay Kumar, who alerted HMWSSB officials.

Pranay Kumar, a resident of Jiyaguda and Convenor of the BJP State Legal Cell’s SC Morcha, flagged the issue in an urgent complaint, calling for immediate inspection of the pipeline, identification of the contamination source, and restoration of safe drinking water to the area.

Recurring problem, new location

Speaking to HyderabadMail, Pranay Kumar said that supply of contaminated water has been a recurring issue across multiple localities in Jiyaguda. For instance, he noted that a similar problem was recently rectified in Kurma Basti, but has now re-emerged in the Thakur Panch area. According to him, affected residents have been experiencing the issue for the past three to four days.

According to Pranay Kumar, the water supply to the area originates from an overhead tank fed from the Red Hills pumping station. Moreover, he noted that the contamination appears to be localized rather than affecting the entire supply network, which he said suggests the problem lies not with the source itself but with a damaged section of pipeline further down the distribution line.

He explained, “If the main tank was the problem, everyone would have dirty water. But only some places are affected.” Consequently, he thinks a broken drainage pipe might be letting sewage leak into the water supply in a few places, but not all the time.

Complaint filed, response awaited

Pranay Kumar said he lodged a formal complaint with the relevant authorities and was informed that officials are working to rectify the issue. However, he noted that a similar complaint had previously been addressed in the area, but the recurrence has raised renewed concerns among residents about the reliability of the local water supply infrastructure.

He requested that officials conduct a comprehensive inspection of the pipeline network to identify the source of contamination and implement a permanent remedy rather than a temporary fix.
