Jitender takes charge as new Telangana’s Director-General of Police

HYDERABAD: Senior IPS officer, Dr. Jitender has appointed as the new Director-General of Police (DGP) of Telangana on Wednesday. Jitender has replaced Ravi Gupta. The official orders were issued by Chief Secretary A. Santhi Kumari on Wednesday. Ravi Gupta has been transferred to the position of Special Chief Secretary, Home.

Government issues orders

Jitender, 1992 batch IPS officer from Andhra Pradesh cadre. He has an extensive career in law enforcement department. His appointment was delayed due to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s visit to Mahbubnagar. Jitender’s career began as an ASP in Nirmal, followed by roles as Additional SP in Bellampalli and SP in Mahbubnagar and Guntur.

Jitender served in the CBI and Greyhounds in Delhi between 2004 and 2006. He was later promoted to DGP and served in the Visakhapatnam Range. He also worked as the DIG of Warangal Range during the Telangana movement and held various significant positions, including AP CID, Enquiry Commission, Vigilance and Enforcement, and Additional Traffic Commissioner in Hyderabad.

Jitender was also the Additional DGP of Telangana’s Security Wing and DG of Prisons Department. Currently, he serves as the Principal Secretary of Home. He is set to retire in September 2025, giving him a tenure of 14 months as DGP.

Ravi Gupta, a 1990 batch officer, took charge as DGP in December 2023. His appointment followed the suspension of the then DGP Anjani Kumar by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for meeting Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy during the election counting process.

About New DGP Jitender

Jitender, originally from Punjab, was born into a farming family in Jalandhar. He joined the Andhra Pradesh cadre after clearing the civil services exam. His initial postings included Nirmal and Bellampalli, where he dealt with significant challenges, including Naxal activities.

Jitender’s diverse experience spans roles in the CBI, Greyhounds, and various high-level commissions and departments. His work in Hyderabad’s Traffic Commissionerate and Telangana’s Security Wing highlighted his capabilities in urban and state-wide law enforcement.

His appointment as DGP comes at a crucial time, with expectations for his leadership to enhance law and order in Telangana. His extensive background and strategic postings are seen as assets for the state’s policing.

Jitender met Chief Minister Revanth Reddy at the Secretariat for a courtesy call after his appointment. The government’s decision to appoint Jitender is part of a strategic move to strengthen the state’s law enforcement framework.
