Heritage Activists Oppose Alleged Encroachment at Jamali Darwaza in Golconda Fort

HYDERABAD: Heritage activists and historians have raised concerns over a newly constructed wall that they say has altered the original appearance of the historic Jamali Darwaza at Golconda Fort.
According to activists, the wall has come up over a portion of the protected monument. They claim it encroaches on an area that once served as a shelter for guards posted at one of the fort’s gateways.
Residents and activists said the construction appeared within the last 15 days. They also criticised the authorities for failing to protect the monument from encroachments.
Heritage activist Md Habeebuddin said Golconda Fort extends well beyond its citadel. It includes several historic gateways, boundary walls and moats. However, he alleged that many of these structures have already suffered encroachments. He added that the authorities have not taken effective action to stop them.
Encroachments threaten Golconda Fort’s historic character
Historians warned that illegal constructions can damage the authenticity and historical character of protected monuments. Meanwhile, local resident Abdul Hafeez said neglect has encouraged more encroachments around the fort.
He pointed out that a tin shed near Moti Darwaza has remained in place for nearly two years. Despite repeated concerns, officials have not removed it.
Anuradha Reddy, convenor of the Hyderabad chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), said the custodian authority should immediately file a complaint and begin legal action because Jamali Darwaza is part of a protected monument.
She added that public awareness remains the most effective way to protect unprotected heritage structures.
Police promise action
Local police said they will issue a notice shortly. They added that they will remove the alleged encroachment after completing the required procedure.
The reported construction has once again sparked concerns among heritage conservationists. They have urged authorities to strengthen enforcement and prevent further encroachments at Golconda Fort.
