Accident-prone bend near Jalagam Vengal Rao Park on Banjara Hills Road No 1 in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The bend near Jalagam Vengal Rao Park on Road No. 1, Banjara Hills, has turned into an accident-prone spot, with crashes reported almost daily. Despite repeated incidents, there has been little response from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and traffic police.

Records show that 46 road accidents occurred at the Vengal Rao Park bend in the past three years. Six people died and over 50 were injured in these crashes. Damaged vehicles lie in police station premises as evidence.

Officials have neither installed speed breakers nor put up warning signs alerting motorists to the dangerous curve. After each accident, Panjagutta and Banjara Hills police register cases, but residents allege that no permanent measures have been taken.

Police records indicate that most accidents occur at the curve leading from Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences towards FCL junction. Though First Information Reports are registered, critics say preventive steps remain absent.

Measures residents propose

Residents suggest widening the road by reducing part of the फुटpath near the park entrance. They want encroachments on the फुटpath removed to prevent pedestrians from stepping onto the carriageway.

They have also demanded installation of speed breakers and caution boards at the bend. Obstructing large trees should be cleared, they said.

Residents urged the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and traffic police to study the causes of accidents and prepare a concrete road safety plan. They said police should not delay action citing jurisdiction issues whenever accidents occur.
