Fact Check: Mumbai Flood Video Falsely Shared as Hyderabad Floods
Claim: Heavy rains have submerged Hyderabad city, leaving residents stranded. A viral video is being shared as footage from Hyderabad.
Fact: The viral video has no connection with Hyderabad. It is actually from Mumbai and shows flood-related scenes from Nalasopara.
The claim being circulated on social media is false. The viral video is not from Hyderabad but from Mumbai.
A close examination of the viral post led us to the original upload on the X account @byomkesbakshy. Several users had asked where the incident had taken place. In response, the person who uploaded the video clarified that it was recorded in Nalasopara, Mumbai.
We then extracted key frames from the viral video and performed a reverse image search. The search led us to multiple media reports carrying the same footage.
According to these reports, the video was recorded during the recent spell of continuous heavy rainfall in Mumbai, which left several roads waterlogged. The footage shows people playing, swimming and bathing in the floodwater accumulated on the streets.
Many social media users have been sharing the video claiming that people in Mumbai were enjoying the rains and floods. However, the reality is that poor drainage infrastructure in several parts of Mumbai has resulted in severe waterlogging. Residents have complained that floodwater has entered residential areas, causing significant inconvenience and raising health concerns. While some people were seen swimming and splashing water on each other, others recorded the scenes and shared them online with misleading captions.
Due to incessant rainfall in Mumbai, authorities declared holidays for educational institutions. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also advised residents to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary and asked citizens to contact the emergency helpline 1916 in case of any untoward incident.
To further verify the claim, we contacted officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). They confirmed that the viral video has no connection with Hyderabad.
