Abdullapurmet: Iran apple imports hit by war

ABDULLAPURMET: War conditions in West Asia are affecting the supply of imported apples and other fruits to Hyderabad markets. Traders at the Batasingaram fruit market said imports have slowed, pushing up prices as stocks decline.
Market sources linked to the Gaddiannaram Agricultural Market Committee said imports of apples have already stalled due to the conflict in the region.
Batasingaram market sees fall in imported fruit supply
Every year between January and June, India receives large shipments of apples from Iran. The bright red apples imported from the country are popular among consumers for their appearance and taste.
However, traders said prolonged war conditions are likely to affect production and exports from major apple-growing areas in West Azerbaijan and Urmia regions of Iran.
Prices rise as stocks shrink in Hyderabad
More than 100 tonnes of apples were imported into the Batasingaram market during March, traders said. A large share of these consignments consisted of Iranian apples.
Meanwhile, imports of dates to the city have also begun to decline. India imports fresh dates mainly from Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, which arrive at various ports before being transported to Hyderabad markets.
