Interstate thief recaptured after Kalwakurthy police station escape

KALWAKURTHY : A hardened interstate thief who escaped from Kalwakurthy police station in Nagarkurnool district has been recaptured by the Central Crime Station (CCS) police.

According to reliable police sources, the accused, Telugu Nagireddy, alias Mallepoola Nagireddy, hails from Veerapur village in Kothapalli mandal of Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh. He is an accused in multiple theft cases, including cases registered in the Kalwakurthy police station limits.

Dramatic escape from custody

Nagireddy, who was lodged in Anantapur district jail, was taken into custody by Kalwakurthy police on November 11, last year, and brought to Kalwakurthy for questioning.

On the night of November 13, while head constable Niranjan, constable Lalsingh Naik and home guard Laxman were on guard duty, the accused allegedly gave them the slip and escaped through a toilet window.

Suspensions, charge memo follow

Despite an intensive manhunt, police initially failed to trace him. Senior officers later issued a charge memo to then Kalwakurthy sub inspector Madhava Reddy. The head constable and constable were suspended, while the home guard was attached to the Superintendent of Police’s office.

Arrest in Medchal

The accused was finally arrested by Medchal CCS police in Hyderabad on Tuesday night. He was brought back to Kalwakurthy police station in the early hours of Wednesday, sources said.
